Port Washington celebrates Hanukkah with annual Mega Gelt Drop

Posted: Updated:

The first candle of a 14-foot menorah was lit as Port Washington residents kicked off the first day of Hanukkah.

Chocolate coins were showered down on event goers Sunday at the annual Mega Gelt Drop.

People also enjoyed good food, music, dancing and even entertainment from a fire juggler.

Parents say it's a great way to ring in the Jewish holiday for children.

"The holidays are not about the presents that much," says Sam Logvin, of Port Washington. "It's really about spending time with my family."

Rabbi Shalom Paltiel, of Chabad of Port Washington, organizes the event. He says hundreds of people, including many who are not Jewish, come out to the event every year.
