After months of work, the EMS Station 26 in Morrisania celebrated its reopening.
They say they couldn't be happier to be back. FDNY Commissioner Daniel Nigro joined local officials for a special ribbon-cutting ceremony Monday to celebrate the station's grand reopening.
Hundreds of thousands of dollars went into upgrading the facility in an effort to improve daily operations.
"The station was renovated due to our union testimony at City Hall of the subhuman conditions our members worked under," FDNY EMS Local 2507 President Oren Barzilay said in a statement to News 12. "Health and safety issues such as insufficient bathrooms, locker shortages, lack of showers for gross contamination wash, etc."
EMS Station 26 is also where Yadira Arroyo worked. The 44-year-old EMT was killed in the line of duty nearly three years ago. They say her presence is still felt and that she'll never be forgotten.
"We are highly protective of Yadira. She was an angel. She really was a sweet spirit," said Capt. Wayne Jones.
Local officials say they're happy to have the station back, doing what they always do best - serving the community.
"The work our EMS workers perform is nothing less than extraordinary. Today in a newly renovated home, the work continues and will go on for generations to come," says Commissioner Nigro.
