New federal funding to protect houses of worship amidst recent hate crimesPosted: Updated:
In the wake of the recent hate crimes and bias attacks against the Jewish community, new federal funding has been enacted to protect houses of worship.
The New York City congressional delegation denounced the recent tide of intolerance that has swept through the city. On Thursday, the delegation announced an increase in federal funding to protect houses of worship, as well as some nonprofits that are vulnerable to hate.
The federal funding nearly doubled from $50 million to now $90 million. The funding is for churches, synagogues, and mosques nationwide. All of this is due to the increasing climate of anti-Semitism against large Jewish communities throughout the tri-state.
Local congressional members say an increase in protection is needed more than ever. The delegation says that in the upcoming days they will be working to make sure New York City gets its fair share of the grant money.
However, they say local houses of worship have to do their part and apply for the funding.
