Game honors mother of slain teen 'Junior,' salutes kids who went to camp named for him

The Manhattan College Jaspers honored the mother of slain Bronx teen Lesandro "Junior" Guzman-Feliz during a basketball game Saturday.

The event also celebrated Bronx children who attended the Fresh Air Fund Camp Junior. The sleepaway camp in Fishkill was named in memory of Junior to give low-income children in the borough a chance to experience outdoor activities and expose them to new environments.

Many of the kids who went to the camp over the summer attended Saturday's game with their families.

Junior's mother, Leandra Feliz, was honored at halftime while surrounded by many of the campers.

Organizers say that at her darkest hour, Leandra Feliz thought of other people's children because she spoke out in favor of having a camp outside of New York City to offer them positive experiences.

Deedee Davis, a player on the women's team, attended the camp years back. She says it was a great opportnity that transformed her life.

Leandra Feliz says she's grateful.

"God bless everyone to be here and just continue blessing everybody who be supportive of Camp Junior. We need to keep Camp Junior to bring the kids out of the streets and I appreciate it."

Registration is now open for families interested in sending their own children. A total of 392 kids were sent to the camp last summer, and they hope to have twice as many attend this summer.
