A woman from the Bronx has made it her mission to help residents in need, one neighbor at a time.
Marisol Baez has always wanted to help people. It's something she created a habit of doing growing up in public housing and something she knew she would continue doing as an adult.
"I’ve always let my mom know that one day I’m going to be that person that they turn to," Baez says.
Baez has been working at the Mosholu Montefiore Community Center for the last few years, as the community coordinator for the center's Healthy Families Program. It helps residents in crisis with everything, from finding food to put on the table, filling out and translating forms and dealing with eviction.
"Nobody is turned away. There is no service we do not do," Baez says.
"Marisol been helping the whole family," says Rosa Cayasso, who is one of Baez's clients. She has come to the office for issues with her apartment and food stamp applications. Each time, she says, Baez has come up with solutions, and helped her make sense of the problems.
“She said ‘go to Marisol. Marisol will help you.’ And I did and I was not sorry that I did. She was a great person,’ Cayasso recalls.
For residents who need help like Cayasso, Baez encourages everyone to just come to the center. One doesn’t have to bring any paperwork with them, just oneself and whatever problem they have and she'll be there to help.
