New year, new water main project in Riverdale

The new year is bringing a much-needed water main project that will replace aging underground pipes in Riverdale.
However, some neighbors are concerned that the upcoming work will take away parking. The $19 million project is by the city's Department of Environmental Protection.
It will replace aging 8-inch underground pipes with bigger and wider 12-inch water mains. City officials say the new installation will help improve water pressure for families in Riverdale.
The work is expected to begin in two weeks. It will start on Sedgwick Avenue on West 238th Street near the Jerome Park Reservoir and extend to Fort Independence Street as well as some surrounding side streets.
Most of the construction work is expected to take place during the week between 7 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. but could last until 6 p.m.
The Department of Environmental Protection said in a statement, "Crews will take all precautions to limit any impact to the neighborhood during this critical work replacing the nearly 100 year old water mains serving the homes and businesses in the area."
Neighbors tell News 12 they'll take the minor inconvenience that construction may bring if it means better improvement in water service.
