"Thankful ... I thank God" Man shot at Bay Plaza Mall recalls scary moment

Posted: Updated:

A man is thankful for the gift cards in his pocket after being shot in the leg while leaving work at the Bay Plaza Mall.

"I turned around, he turned around, he pushed me and says, 'don't move, don't move,' I said, 'it's not going to happen.' He went to grab my pocket," said David.

David says he struggled to defend himself as he was trying to get in his car after his shift at Jennifer Furniture Tuesday night. He says two men had him pinned in the parking lot.

"His friend reached into his pocket for a glock, a 9-millimeter, and he shot me in the thigh," said David. What was in David's pocket is what he believes saved him from a more severe injury to his leg.

He attributes his saving grace to the gift cards in his pocket. He says the bullet went through the stack, breaking its momentum so that it could not lodge in his thigh. He says doctors were shocked.

"I think that's what saved me a lot of injuries. It could have been a lot worse and its worse if he hit me a second time," said David.

He says he doesn't recognize the suspects. The only thing they were able to steal from him was his car keys, which makes him wonder if they were trying to steal his car.

David believes the suspects are dangerous and that he wishes mall security could have helped him. "Bay Plaza security should have been around after eight or nine minutes. Your camera man was there before them," David told News 12.

Through it all, he says he is feeling blessed and thankful.

Police have not made any arrests. David says the suspects we wearing mostly gray. News 12 has reached out to Bay Plaza for a response and has not heard back yet.

David says he is hesitant to go back to work, but doesn't want to be kept down.

He says he feels the suspects were targeting him specifically.
