MTA: Tap-and-go fare system coming to 60 more subway stations

Posted: Updated:

The MTA announced Thursday the expansion of its new tap-and-go fare payment system.

The MTA says 60 more subway stations are on track to be equipped with its new contact-free payment system called ONMY by the end of the month.

The system was introduced back in May 2019. They estimate they've gotten more than 5 million taps since the technology was introduced.

On Thursday, the MTA also released a statement about complaints over some riders being overcharged, saying, "We've been notified by about 30 customers, out of more than 5,000,000 taps so far, about unintended charges when the Express Transit feature of their iPhones is activated. The system is a popular success that's working well for the vast majority of people and we're in touch with Apple about addressing the issue of unintended taps."

According to the transit authority, they are planning to entirely phase out the MetroCard by 2023.
