Investigators seek cause of Claremont fire that displaced families

Posted: Updated:

Investigators are still trying to figure out what caused a fast-moving fire that left a dozen Bronx families without a home Thursday night.

Those families are now being helped by the American Red Cross as some return to salvage what they can from their damaged apartments.

Flames shot out from the rooftop at 1114 Findlay Ave., causing panic from tenants. Over 130 firefighters responded to the scene of the three-alarm building fire.

The fire forced families onto the sidewalk. Tenants say they didn't hear the sound of alarms alerting them at the time.

The city's fire department tells News 12 that smoke alarms were present and operational.

Siria Guity says she lives on the fourth floor. She says she and her three children are now staying in temporary housing that is being provided by the American Red Cross.

Although these families have been displaced, they say they are grateful that no lives were lost.
