A Streetsblog report claims the NYPD targets black and Latino New Yorkers when issuing jaywalking tickets.

Streetsblog obtained stats from NYC Open Data and found most of the jaywalking tickets in the city were given to black and Latino people in the 42 Precinct in the Bronx.

From January 2019 to October 2019, there were a total of 316 jaywalking-related summonses issued. Of those, more than 50 percent were in the Bronx – specifically in the 42 Precinct, where 47 tickets were handed out.

The data shows nearly 90 percent of all jaywalking-related summonses issued during that time citywide went to black or Latino people.

An NYPD spokesperson told News 12, “The NYPD enforces the law fairly and equally, and works tirelessly every day to keep every resident and every neighborhood safe.”
