Dental care program teaches Bronx students about cavity prevention, healthy habits

Posted: Updated:

Going to the dentist can be stressful, at any age.

P.S. 140 in Morrisania is creating healthy habits at a young age for its students by bringing the dentist to them. The goal is not only to provide dental care on the spot but also to teach them about cavity prevention.

The free school-based dental program was made possible through an NYU College of Dentistry study.

According to the university, the Bronx has nearly twice the national average of cavities. They say it can lead to kids missing more school and can create difficulty in paying attention.

Students receive information about oral hygiene and then get preventative dental care by a dentist. They also get to take home a goodie bag with toothpaste and a toothbrush, and parents get a full report.

The kids will receive the same free preventative dental care at the school twice a year, for up to five years.
