Manida Street could be considered a historic district

Posted: Updated:

The city is in talks to make sure the charm never fades on Manida Street.

On Tuesday, the Landmarks Preservation Committee took the first step in considering the Hunts Point area as a new historic district.

The block is lined with semi-detached brick houses that were built in the early 20th-century in response to transportation improvements and industrialization, according to the LPC.

Calendaring is the first formal step in the designation process. Once calendared, the commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed designation at a future date, followed by a public meeting during which the commission will vote on the designation.

Designating the area as a historic district will offer some protections and regulations when it comes to demolition or construction.
