Newly passed legislation by the City Council aims to save cab drivers time and money.

City cab drivers say they have gotten two violations from different agencies for a single mistake, so lawmakers are doubling down on those double penalties.

It's one of two bills sponsored by Councilmember Fernando Cabrera recently approved by the City Council.

The second bill throws out Taxi and Limousine Commission violations for broken car lights -- if drivers can fix them within 24 hours and show proof to the TLC.

Both pieces of legislation are aimed at protecting taxi and for-hire drivers from being drained by fines - especially because right now Cabrera says the average salary for drivers in the city is $32,000 a year.

Antonio Cabrera, president of the New York State Federation of Taxi Drivers – who is not related to the councilmember – says he supports the changes - after 2019 saw at least eight New York City cabbies reportedly commit suicide.

A spokesperson for the Taxi and Limousine Commission tells News 12 in a statement, "We are supportive of making it easier for drivers to follow our rules as long as safety is ensured for the general public, and we support any administrative changes we can make to simplify licensees' interactions with the TLC."

News 12 also reached out to the mayor's office to find out if and when he intends to sign those bills, but has not heard back yet.
