Mott Haven school fundraising to provide instruments in music class

Posted: Updated:
The American Dream Charter School in Mott Haven has only been around for six years, but its music program is already making a big impact on the students.

The music class, while impactful, is missing one fundamental element — instruments.

Serge Bonnaire teaches music theory to the students with technology, but recently launched a fundraiser to bring ten keyboards to the classroom.

Bonnaire is looking to raise $2,000 to help the students apply their lessons with real instruments.

"For the majority of them they're excited about it, they just want to learn instruments and the piano. The keyboard is the instrument of choice to learn theory … to apply instruction as well, so it will serve many purposes," said Bonnaire.

The school hopes to raise the money by May and if they reach their goal, Bonnaire and his students hope to have concerts twice a year.
