Soundview residents' mailboxes remain out of commission

The mailboxes at the Soundview New York City Housing Authority building do not contain mail. Instead, there are drips of water, rust and what appears to be some kind of mold.
Residents say they have made complaints with NYCHA, but that nothing has changed so far. One woman who lives on the first floor keeps the lobby door open in an attempt to alleviate the associated stench.
Other residents tell News 12 that for the past six months, they have had to walk about 15 minutes to the Lafayette Ave. post office to pick up their mail.
While News 12 was at the building, two NYCHA workers did stop by to check out the mailboxes and said that management was aware of the issue.
NYCHA says the mailboxes have been out of commission because of a steam leak. The agency says it is working on repairs and should be finished by the end of this week, at which point mail service will resume.
