Throgs Neck medical practice launches campaign to help people understand coronavirus threat

Posted: Updated:

A global health emergency is sparking fear throughout the nation that every cough, fever and chill is a symptom of the coronavirus.

One medical practice in Throgs Neck has launched a campaign to ensure the public fully understands the threat.

Dr. Michael Tugetman, of American Family Care, says that those who are going to take the extra precaution of wearing a mask should make sure it's snug, and they should wear it consistently.

He say that when worn properly masks can prevent the spread of coronavirus when an infected person coughs and sneezes.

However, the CDC is not yet recommending face masks because the virus is not an immediate threat to someone who has not had direct contact with an infected person. American Family Care says the flu is currently a bigger health threat in the U.S.

The CDC estimates more than 10,000 people have died from the flu this season, while more than 300 people have died from coronavirus in China - not a single death has been reported yet in the U.S.

American Family Care says tips to protect yourself from the coronavirus or the flu include washing hands regularly, covering coughs and sneezes with your elbow, and staying away from sick people. It also says to avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth

Tugetman says those who have the cold or flu symptoms should see a personal physician or stop by an urgent care center.
