The latest numbers released by the NYPD show an increase in crime across New York City.
Police Commissioner Dermot Shea, Mayor Bill de Blasio and other police officials are addressing the 16.9% increase of crime that includes a jump in transit crimes, housing crimes and shooting incidents.
Five of the seven indexes, or main crimes, were up last month when compared to Jan. 2019. The NYPD says robberies were up 36.8% with an increase of 347 victims.
They say there has been a smaller jump in the number of felony assaults of nearly 8%.
The NYPD says burglaries have went up 26%, with 192 more victims than last Jan. Meanwhile, they say grand larceny--the most common crime according to numbers-- is up over 10%.
The NYPD also says there has been a huge spike in auto grand larceny with a 72.5% jump. This adds up to nearly 250 more victims.
Shea has said publicly that the changes to bail reform played a part in the rise of crimes and said it again Tuesday afternoon. However, the mayor says he has reason for optimism. While overall crime is up, murder and rape stats are down.
The NYPD says there were just 23 murders citywide last month. This is compared to 29 in the month of January in 2019, which shows a 20.7% decrease.
As for rape, the NYPD says there were 28 fewer last month with 127 cases. This is compared to 155 in the month of Jan. in 2019, which shows an 18.1% decrease.
The NYPD also says hate crimes are down 24% from last Jan and that of the 29 hate crimes reported last month--21 of them were anti-Semitic. Shea and Mayor Bill de Blasio have stressed the need to reach out to young people in the city.
They introduced youth coordinators as part of neighborhood policing and plan to hold a youth forum later this month in Manhattan.
