Co-op City residents say they are upset by a wind turbine that was placed near the Bay Plaza Shopping Center in mid-December.
News 12 reported last month that the wind turbine partially collapsed onto an unoccupied car about two weeks after it was installed. The turbine also brought down a digital billboard with it. There were no injuries.
Councilman Andy King announced Thursday that turbines on the corner of Bartow and Baychester avenues will no longer cause problems in the neighborhood.
"After a conversation with Baychester LLC…they have apologized and recognized that this was a mistake," says King.
Due to the large financial cost it would take to get rid of the structure, Councilman King says the developers have other plans that would better represent the community.
"We agreed to make this some kind of art piece with lighting to signify where Co-op City is on the map," he says.
Others say the turbine should be taken down regardless of the cost.
