Members of the 161st Street Business Improvement District are asking to be part owners of a new soccer field coming to the community.
The new soccer field in the Grand Concourse will eliminate a highway entrance for the Major Deegan, a parking garage and an entire street. Most agree the benefits will be worth it but Executive Director of the BID, Dr. Cary Goodman, wants to ensure the neighborhood gains financial support from the new stadium.
A few owners, like the New York Yankees, have already been named. The baseball team promised to give back to the community but Goodman wants to make sure they keep their word by being involved in the planning and running of the stadium.
He is hoping to make more use of the stadium by adding a women's' team and creating the opportunity for community use and events.
