One Bronx leader has made it his mission to dedicate his life to enriching kids' lives.
Looking at the pictures on his office walls, Davon Russell can still remember his former students' names from nearly two decades ago.
Russell has spent the last 23 years at the community organization WHEDCo, developing and crafting after-school and early education programs for Bronx kids.
Two years ago, he was promoted to president.
“We have to be committed to making their world a better place,” Russell says.
That commitment hasn't wavered throughout the years partly because Russell says he can see himself in the kids he works with.
“I mean I was a poor kid. Grew up in Jamaica. My house, for a lack of a better description of where I grew up, was a tiny, one-room place. But we had a lot of love there,” Russell says.
Now he's putting that love he grew up with back into the programs he's developed for the organization.
Today, WHEDco offers more than 15 different types of classes, and a college-access program.
