BYOB will have another meaning starting March 1, because the bag waste reduction law will go into effect.
The Department of Environmental Conservation says this law affects any store required to collect a state tax.
The DEC also send out reminders to New Yorkers, reminding them to get their hands on reusable bags or pay a five-cent fee when they check out. A portion of the money collected will go toward the Environmental Protection Fund.
News 12 has also received reports that some supermarkets are getting a head start on the ban.
"Stores are able to do whatever they want to do with regards to the items that they sell, if a locality has already put in place the fee that is already in place, obviously they have to comply.. the state law goes into effect March 1 and that is the date we are focused on," said Sean Mahar from the Department of Environmental Conservation.
