As Italy continues to deal with the growing number of deadly reported coronavirus cases, there's also concern from Bronx residents who have loved ones in the country.

Italy has reported 17 deaths so far. The outbreak has led to empty restaurants, stadiums and other public places resulting in a colossal drop in tourism.

Thursday night, Community Board 11 addressed concerns about the virus and what steps the Bronx community can do to prevent it from spreading.

At "Just For Looks" salon in Morris Park, how the virus has gripped the European country came as a shock. "I can't believe it went to Italy so fast," said Pasquale Caroleo.

 

During this week, Caroleo says he would normally be in Italy but he's scrapped his annual vacation.

"My usual trip is around this time but this year I'm canceling because I don't want to get sick I have to play it safe," said Caraoleo. He says his family still resides there and he frequently calls to check-in.

 

As the World Health Organization continues to monitor affected countries, Bronx communities with loved ones in Europe are continuing to keep a close eye on the outbreak abroad.
