Gov. Cuomo, Mayor de Blasio say city is ‘ready’ after 1st coronavirus case is confirmed

Posted: Updated:

Gov. Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio addressed the first confirmed case of the coronavirus in the state, asking New Yorkers to stay informed but not to panic.

Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio joined forces Monday to keep the public informed and to address that the city is prepared and ready to handle any coronavirus cases.

A 39-year-old woman, a health care worker who was traveling back from Iran on Tuesday, is the first confirmed case in the city. She was traveling with her husband, and both are now quarantined in their Manhattan apartment.

Health care experts believe the couple took all preventative precautions, but the city is retracing their steps to make sure anyone who may have come in contact with them is notified and possibly tested.

Gov. Cuomo says his goal is to have 1,000 tests per day available for health professionals.

Health officials are asking New Yorkers to go about their daily lives, but to be mindful and take precaution.

They advise hand washing, covering your mouth if you cough and going to the doctor if you feel sick.
