Two public schools that share a building in the Bronx are reopened Friday after city officials said a student "self-tested" positive for the coronavirus.

News 12 is told the student who attends the Laboratory School of Finance and Technology and South Bronx Preparatory tested negative for COVID-19.

The child's parent is said to have alerted the school that the child tested positive for COVID-19, leading city officials to shut down two co-located schools and begin the disinfecting process.

After an investigation from school and city officials, Chancellor Richard Carranza tweeted out that the co-located schools will be in session today and say they confirmed there’s no positive test that will impact the safety of students.

News 12 is told the schools are located in the same building and have been disinfected out of precaution. Both schools have been cleared for students to attend class today, despite Thursday’s confusion when students were sent home as they were arriving.

Mayor Bill de Blasio, alongside the school chancellor, says that the New York City Public School system will remain open regardless of the growing concern over COVID-19. Confirmed cases would be addressed on a case-by-case basis when it comes down to closing down a particular school.

There are over 1 million students who attend public schools in the city. Officials say many of the students are homeless and depend on school meals and programs.

Officials say closing public schools is the city’s last resort.
