Festival of Colors will proceed in Soundview with coronavirus precautions

Posted: Updated:

The Hindu Festival of Colors will be held in Soundview but with caution because of the coronavirus outbreak.

The Vishnu Mandir Hindu Temple and Bharati Dance Academy say some of the services this year are being held outdoors in the fresh air.

Holi, or Phagwah, is a colorful festival celebrated by followers of Hinduism in which they welcome the spring season.

Revelers observe the event by throwing colored powder at each other to represent breaking the barriers of discrimination.

Hand sanitizers will be passed around during indoor prayer service. Participants will be asked greet each other with hand gestures instead of an embrace, and one to two-hour cleaning sessions will be enacted to sanitize the temple before and after each service.

Anyone who is sick is urged to stay home.

Organizers say this is an important time to remember the victories of good over evil.

They say there will be a cleanup once the festival ends.

Organizers say they want participants to have fun at the event.
