After having no cooking gas for months, families in a Bronx development received some good news from their building management Tuesday. 

Franklin Sanchez, a tenant at 1065 Gerard Ave, says he is longing for the day he can cook a hot meal. Sanchez says the building has been without cooking gas for five months. “This is ridiculous it's five months,” said Sanchez. 

Families have been relying on hot plates given to them by building management to cook their meals. 

Prana Investments owns the building, and a representative tells News 12 that the problem started in January. They say it stemmed from a leaky water pipe. 

 

The Department of Buildings says that it approved gas restoration on Feb. 5 for part of the building and for the rest of it on April 23. 

Sam Singer, who represents the building, says that for months he has been back and forth with several city agencies to restore the cooking gas. 

“We have been stuck in a Catch-22 with Con Edison and the Building Department, and no one was on the same page,” said Singer. 

After News 12’s visit to the building and follow-up emails about the issue, there was some positive news for the tenants. 

“Con Edison called this morning after you and News 12 called them, said they are coming this Friday at 8:30 am and we are so grateful,” said Singer. 

Con Edison tells News 12 that it has reached out to a plumber to ensure a safe restoration of gas to the building and that the test will be conducted on Friday. 

They say if the building passes, service for cooking gas and dryers will be restored.
