After numerous calls of a foul odor, police were called to a funeral home in Flatlands where they discovered dozens of bodies stored in a U-Haul truck.

Police responded to the Andrew T. Cleckley Funeral Home Wednesday after numerous complaints from neighbors of a foul stench.

When police arrived, they discovered dozens of bodies being stored in U-Haul trucks outside the funeral home.

Health Commissioner Dr. Howard Zucker, said in part, “following an investigation by the State Department of Health, I issued an immediate suspension order to the Andrew T. Cleckley Funeral Home in Brooklyn – whose actions were appalling, disrespectful to the families of the deceased, and completely unacceptable."

Residents say it's been an issue for weeks, and they are happy to see authorities stepping in.

Mayor Bill de Blasio says the incident is unacceptable, and says he doesn't understand how any funeral home could let it happen.

"Now this horrible situation that occurred with the funeral home in Brooklyn [is] absolutely unacceptable, let's be clear about this. Funeral homes are private organizations, private businesses. They have an obligation to the people they serve to treat them with dignity. I have no idea in the world how any funeral home could let this happen. The city does historically not have a direct working with relationship with funeral homes. They are regulated by the state of New York. So it's not an area that we work with a lot, but again we all have to work together to solve problems," says Mayor de Blasio.

News 12 reached out to the funeral home for a response, but did not hear back.

On Wednesday, a man who identified himself as the owner of the funeral home told News 12 they were just trying to help families bury their loved ones as other funeral homes turn them away.
