Mayor Bill de Blasio and his wife Chirlane McCray donated blood Thursday at the New York Blood Center in Brooklyn.
He says the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the normal flow of drives at this time of year and says New Yorkers need to step up to help those in need.
"The last week or so, supplies got to a pretty unprecedented low level. And that is because the blood drives that we normally depend on haven't been happening in corporations and city agencies civic groups that just haven't been happening. They will happen again, we're going to find a way to bring them back as we slowly but surely reopen, but right now it comes down individuals in New Yorkers have big hearts. New Yorkers go to bat for each other. The way to do it now is to give blood,” said De Blasio.
He says the supply at the New York Blood Center is very low and is urging New Yorkers to go to their website to schedule an appointment.
