Thousands of people around New York are coming together virtually this Memorial Day to also remember the lives lost in nursing homes during the coronavirus pandemic.

The state reports over 5,000 nursing home and assisted living facility residents have died from coronavirus.

The statewide coalition New York Caring Majority will be holding social distance vigils outside nursing homes, like the Hebrew Home in Riverdale.

"We chose this location because Riverdale has more than 70 deaths in nursing homes and we believe it's important to shine a light on further care."

Participants will hold signs that read “residents and workers are essential” and “nobody is disposable" to demand more action from the state.

Mayor Bill de Blasio recently released a plan to help test staff at nursing homes twice a week and assemble teams to provide assistance.

"I agree we should be testing nursing home employees and the people who are there multiple times a week. However, I wish it would've happened months ago because so many lives could've been saved," says District 16 Democratic candidate Jamaal Bowman.
