A huge misunderstanding caused a lot of confusion and outrage in Gowanus Tuesday after art expressing messages of the Black Lives Matter movement was unintentionally painted over.
Brooklyn artist Lexi Bella has a 9-year-old daughter and says she is Black and White and felt passionate about the BLM she made her own mask and signs.
However, since Bella is seven months pregnant, they haven’t been able to get out to any protests the past couple of weeks.
When Subway Doodle, another local artist, reached out to her last week about adding fencing on 4th Avenue and Sackett Street, she was moved to do so.
She then painted a mural of her daughter on Sunday.

Subway Doodle had been in touch with the property owner, Avery Hall Investments, the past couple of weeks about continuing and expanding what he began calling the “wall of justice” with different murals to support the BLM movement.
Several artists got on board and expressed it through their paintbrushes.
So, when an image of a woman painting over Bella’s mural surfaced, artists, community members, and the property owners were saddened and frustrated.
Avery Hall Investments tells News 12 that after investigating what happened they found out that the woman was someone who had done some work for them in the past--cleaning up graffiti and sidewalks around sites.
Since the woman hadn’t worked for months and phase one is allowing non-essential work, she went back to work but didn’t contact the company.
Bella and others plan to head back out there to restore the work with full support from the property owners because the message is just too important.
