An artist repainted her Black Lives Matter mural in Gowanus after it was accidentally painted over.
The entire mural was painted over Tuesday, and the property owner says it was not intentional.
Brooklyn artist Lexi Bella says she painted the mural, which was a picture of her daughter, on Sunday as a way to show her support for the Black Lives Matter movement.
She says another artist, Subway Doodle, asked her to add her art to the fencing, and he had been in touch with the property owners, Avery Hall Investments, about continuing what the artists call the “Wall of Justice.”
When an image of a woman painting over Bella’s mural surfaced, the artists, community members, and even the property owners were confused.
Avery Hall investments tells News 12 that after investigating what happened they found out that the woman is someone who had done some work for them in the past, cleaning up graffiti and sidewalks around their sites.
Since the woman hadn’t worked for months, and phase one is allowing non-essential work, she went back to work but didn’t contact the company.
That misunderstanding resulted in erasing the powerful artwork.
Bella says that she’s planning to come back Wednesday, with her daughter, to repaint the mural because the message is just too important. She says she has full support from the property owners.
