Demonstrators: Racial injustice must end but getting rid of police resources isn’t the answer

People all over the country and in New York have called to defund police departments, but many say that would be a mistake.
Community members held a "Defend Our Police and Back The Badge" rally Tuesday night at Loreto Park as a way to show support for all the men and women they say put their lives on the line every day to protect communities across the city.
Those in attendance say they agree that something needs to be done to end racial injustice but that getting rid of police resources isn't the answer.
"They're the guys that's protecting us. They come when we call them. So they need to know the community is behind them. Every color, race, religion. It doesn't matter. We're American," said rally organizer Liane Weihe.
Counter-protesters showed up to the rally, and say that they believe redirecting funds from police departments to other areas in the community like youth programs, family services and education will help put an end to issues many Black people deal with on a daily basis.
