A prayer vigil was held Thursday night in memory of Brandon Hendricks, a 17-year-old boy who was fatally shot days after his graduation. 

The vigil was held on the corner of Davidson Avenue and West 176th Street, the same corner Hendricks was killed late Sunday night. 

People released balloons in his name and chanted “Live like Five”--the jersey number he wore. 

Hendricks was a basketball star at James Monroe High School in Soundview. The New York Post reports that he was a potential walk-on player at St. John’s University in Queens later this Fall. 

Those close to Hendricks called him the role model child and the prime example of what parents hope their child will turn out to be. 

His death comes as crime and shootings have spiked in the city. Speakers at the vigil called the shooter a coward. 

As of Thursday night, no arrests have been made.
