Suspect faces charges in slaying of 18-year-old who was stabbed, set on fire in Highbridge

Police say Adones Betances is facing murder and manslaughter charges.

A 22-year-old suspect faces charges in the slaying of a teenager who was stabbed and set on fire in a gruesome attack in a Highbridge apartment hallway.
Police say 18-year-old Winston Ortiz spent his final moments fighting for his life, as his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital. Detectives spent several hours Wednesday investigating what led up to the brutal assault inside 1045 Woodycrest Ave.
Police say they have a 22-year-old man in custody in connection to the 18-year-old’s death. They say the suspect's name is Adones Betances, and he is facing murder and manslaughter charges. 
Police say the suspect was waiting for the victim in the hallway on the fifth floor. That’s when News 12 is told Ortiz and the suspect got into an argument. The confrontation turned violent when officials say the suspect stabbed Ortiz three times before pouring gasoline on him and lighting him on fire.
Ortiz lived just about two blocks from the building. Witnesses describe hearing screams as Ortiz was rushed to the hospital.
News 12 is told detectives have surveillance video. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
