A Bronx Catholic school will offer students remote learning and five days a week of in-class instruction to help working parents.
Immaculate Conception School says it's ready to welcome back students to the classroom Sept. 9.
Principal Amy Rodriguez says, "The first day of school is going to be teaching the kids how to get into the school and social distance, getting the temperature checked, wearing masks and going to the classroom and socially distancing themselves."
About 280 students are enrolled in the school, which runs from pre-K to eighth grade.
New safety procedures include distance markers outside and throughout the building, hand-washing stations installed in some classrooms, sanitizer dispensers, one-way directional staircases and remodeled classrooms that have desks 6 feet apart.
Rodriguez says they are planning five days a week of in-class learning, a decision they made based on the community 's needs.
"Because a lot of our parents are essential workers and first responders, we need to school five days a week," she says.
The school made upgrades to provide live in-classroom streaming for those who choose remote learning.
Students will remain at their assigned desks with periodic outdoor breaks given throughout the day, and deep cleaning is planned for the evening hours.
Rodriguez says she is confident that COVID-19 safety measures put in place at Immaculate Conception will keep students safe.
"We have all the faith and technology we know that the best place is to be here in our school to pray together and be together as a faith community," she says.
