Manhattan College students simulated a border crossing experience to address the hot-button issue of immigration.

Each participating student was given a mock passport and country of origin, along with a reason why they would come to the United States. They were also given backgrounds that included their professions.

Out of almost 40 participants, nine made it through the mock border. The others were rejected.

It was supposed to be a simulation of what immigrants go through every day to teach them how hard it is. They discussed how they felt to be rejected and treated one way or another by the mock immigration officers.

The event was organized by students who work with a Catholic organization that offers relief to grief-stricken countries. Future topics for the group will include climate change and human trafficking.
