Students at Hostos Community College are participating in a walk to put an end to domestic violence.
Because October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, communities all over the Bronx are coming together to remind survivors that they are not alone.
For the 11th year in a row, participants are marching in silence with a loud message. It aims to help victims see that it's OK to speak up and not be scared.
Councilwoman Annabel Palma is a survivor speaking out to save others, and is being honored for doing so.
"I'm going to continue raising awareness, as domestic violence is never an easy subject to touch," she explains. "A lot of the blame falls on women. A lot of the shame falls on women."
This is important to reinforce at the college, where over 60 percent of the student population is made up of women, according to Palma.
"We have both a social responsibility and personal investment in this issue bringing it to people's attention," she says. "If it's happening to you, speak out, and let someone help you."
