Students to hold second walkout to rally for stronger gun laws
Students from more than 2,500 schools across the country will be holding a walkout rally Friday to demand lawmakers pass stronger gun laws.
These walkouts will take place on the 19th anniversary of the Columbine High School shooting. One of the school participating in Friday’s rallies is Hoboken Charter School.
Student Toby Platt says that he is one of the students who helped put together a rally at Hoboken City Hall.
"When the shootings go away, our thoughts about them don't go away either,” Platt says.
Platt says that he was not alive when the shooting at Columbine happened, but he has learned about it. He says that he saw what happened on the Feb. 14 shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida and he wants to keep the conversation alive about ending gun violence.
Students from Stoneman Douglas and Columbine are coming together this week as part of the Vote for Our Lives movement.
"We finally see that we aren't alone, that some other people in other states far away from us feel the same way and want to make change,” says Stoneman Douglas junior Anne Marshal.
"If no one else is going to change that, it's the students who have to and the young people who have to,” Columbine High School junior Kaylee Tyner says.
Students nationwide previously held an organized school walkout on March 24. Thousands of schools and students participated in the March for Our Lives event.
Friday’s rally at Hoboken City Hall will begin at 4 p.m.
