Students cooked up gourmet dishes inspired by hip-hop lyrics in Bed-Stuy Sunday.
The organization "Yo Stay Hungry" held the annual competition in honor of Biggie Smalls’ birthday, which is on May 21.
The competition was held at St. John's Bread and Life Pantry and gave students the opportunity to work with master chefs.
Dishes were based off of Biggie's famous lyrics. A “T-bone steak, cheese, eggs and Welch's grape” were used to celebrate his hit single "Big Poppa," which was released in 1994.
Five teams of students worked together to impress the judges and each team brought their own take on the lyrics. They all used the same ingredients as inspiration.
Organizers say the contest is a great way to teach young people to cook healthy meals using quality ingredients.
The event was free for the community and at the end of the day, a scholarship was given to one lucky student.
