Suffolk County is cracking down on reckless bike riding with the passage of a bill by a vote of 17-1.

Under the new measure, police can confiscate bicycles and issue fines of up to $250 for violations. The violations include popping wheelies in the middle of traffic, zigzagging in front of cars, and riding under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Some people say when it comes to safety, they are all for it. Others say parents should teach their kids how to be responsible.

Legislator Kara Hahn says the measure will not target minority communities unfairly. She says the Legislature discussed the issue and were able to find a bipartisan way forward.

The bill now heads to Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone to review.
