Vision Long Island held its annual Complete Streets Summit Friday in Farmingdale.
Community leaders, planners and engineers were among the attendees looking at ways to improve road safety on Long Island.
The group compiled a list of suggested safety improvements, including adding bike lanes, installing sidewalk crossings, upgrading road medians and placing pedestrian countdown signals at intersections.
The summit points to Montauk Highway in Lindenhurst as an example of a roadway needing changes. In the past three years, eight pedestrians were killed on the road. Half of those victims were seniors.
"It's not about cars anymore," said state Sen. Jack Martins. "It's about cars, pedestrians, people of all ages, people with disabilities."
Eric Alexander, of Vision Long Island, says the new state budget set aside a half-billion dollars for some of the suggested traffic improvements. Alexander says there are over 40 safety improvement projects that could soon get underway in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
