Suspect charged in pregnant woman's murder
A woman has been charged with second-degree murder and other crimes in the stabbing death of a pregnant woman in the Bronx.
The grisly incident happened Friday afternoon on Monticelo Avenue. Police say Ashleigh Wade, 22, stabbed Angelikque Sutton, who was nearly nine months pregnant. Investigators say Wade cut the baby out of Sutton's body, and Wade claims that she is the one who gave birth to the child.
Sutton did not survive, but the newborn girl was hospitalized and is expected to be OK.
Wade, who was reportedly a childhood friend of Sutton, has been charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon.
DNA testing is underway to officially determine that Sutton was the baby's mother, but police sources tell News 12 that due to her injuries, she more than likely was.
Wade was hospitalized to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.
The New York Post said Sutton was remembered at Zion Hill Pentacostal Church in Morrisania Sunday. Her father, a bishop at the church, says he is devastated but grateful his new granddaughter, Genesis, is healthy.
Wade's landlord told News 12 that the suspect claimed to have a due date of this past Monday. The New York Times is reporting that the alleged father of her baby posted a picture of an ultrasound to his Facebook page. There is also an apparent gift registry on Babies R Us that is under Wade's name.
