Teacher nominated for $1 million award
A Bronx teacher is being recognized as one of the best in the world and is up for a $1 million award.
Alhassan Susso, who teaches government and economics at International Community High School, is one of 50 educators worldwide who is being nominated for the Varkey Foundation "global teacher" prize.
Susso was selected as a finalist because of his "inspiring teens" program, which teaches kids how to become critical thinkers.
From the start of his career, Susso's goal was to build a bond with first-generation kids. As an immigrant himself, Susso believes every student of his has the ability to achieve something great.
Starting with seven kids three years ago, Susso now has 35 seniors that come to school early twice a week to learn these life lessons.
Since Susso's program was developed, his kids' standardized test scores have increased by 40 percent.
If he wins the $1 million award, Susso says he will spend the money on expanding his program to other schools across the city, as well as developing an online course so it can be accessed by students around the world.
The winner of the award will be announced in January.
