Scattered throughout the Bronx are architectural gems that signify a bygone era of prosperity in the borough.

The list includes the entrance to the Park Plaza Apartments on Jerome Avenue, a designated New York City landmark near Yankee Stadium, which is the first art deco apartment building built in the Bronx, according to historian Lloyd Ultan.

Ultan says that the expansion of train lines into the West Bronx led to a housing boom.

"There were wealthy people coming to live in the Bronx, especially around the Grand Concourse," Ultan says. "And because of that, today the Bronx has one of the largest collections of art deco residences in the world."

Horace Ginsbern, the architect who designed Park Plaza, went on to create more buildings in its style along and around the Grand Concourse. Another of his projects is the so-called Fish Building near East 167th Street.
