Today marks 20 years since Amadou Diallo was fatally shot by four plainclothes NYPD officers in a case that polarized the city and the nation.
Friends and family gathered Sunday to remember the West African immigrant, who was shot and killed in front of his Bronx home in 1999.
The 23-year-old was mistaken as a suspect by police and shot multiple times. Police fired 41 shots at the unarmed victim.
His case sparked national uproar and attention, and is considered one of the most high profile cases of police brutality to date.
The officers were acquitted at trial.
