Trial begins for Bronx man accused of killing mother
Opening arguments were made today in the case of a Bronx man accused of murdering his mother and scattering her remains across several neighborhood blocks in 2013.
Bahsid McLean is charged with killing his mother, Tanya Byrd, and dismembering her body.
According to investigators, McLean killed his mother after an argument then snapped a photo of himself holding her severed head up like a trophy before scattering the rest of her body parts in garbage bags around the streets of the Melrose section of the Bronx.
Byrd's family members were at the trial, and say McLean has long lead a troubled lifestyle, even going as far as attempting to burn his grandfather's house down.
McLean's lawyer argued that her client was exposed to crack cocaine prior to birth and was diagnosed with a mental disorder at age 6.
He is facing murder and manslaughter charges.
The trial is expected to last several weeks.
