The city Department of Transportation announced significant traction Thursday in its bid to reduce harmful diesel emissions.
Officials say that 500 local delivery trucks have gone green across New York as part of the city's Clean Truck Program.
Officials say thousands of trucks pass through city communities every day, but it's the diesel ones complicating health problems.
In Hunts Point and Port Morris, officials say the high volume of truck traffic correlates with higher than normal asthma rates.
Juan Corcino, who works with Manhattan Beer Distributors headquartered in Hunts Point, says his company has replaced 110 of its diesel trucks with cleaner-burning natural gas vehicles.
The DOT says its goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent across New York by 2050, which would make the Big Apple both the largest American city, and home to the cleanest air.
