Repairs to the Unionport Bridge could mean more traffic for travelers.
The northbound lane of Unionport Road will be closed for about six weeks during a $226 million construction project that involves 26 minority- and women-owned businesses.
The Unionport Bridge supports more than 60,000 vehicles each day. During the project, traffic will be detoured through White Plains Road.
According to Community Board 11 District Manager Jeremy Warnek, White Plains Road has gone from two lanes to one in recent years, causing increased congestion. Members of the board want the two lanes restored, he says.
Warnek says he is worried that fewer lanes and construction on the bridge will mean unbearable gridlock, but acknowledges that the safety of the bridge is a concern.
