US Attorney's Office: 48 people charged in the Bronx for gang-related activity
Four dozen alleged gang members from the Bronx were indicted Wednesday, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Early morning raids netted 23 arrests in operations centered around the Patterson Houses, Mott Haven Houses and River Park Towers, officials say. They expect to make more arrests.
Officials accuse the men of dealing narcotics, committing homicide and creating a rash of violence in the South Bronx.
They say all of the 48 individuals charged are members of the rival "Young Gunz" and "18th Park" gangs. The gangs are responsible for three murders and 30 non-fatal shootings, according to prosecutors.
In one case, gang members are accused of beating 16-year-old Moises Lora to death on Morris Avenue.
In several instances, innocent bystanders suffered gunshot wounds. Authorities also accused some of the suspects of pointing guns at a police officer.
Each individual faces charges that carry prison sentences of 10 years to life.
