'Tis the season to give back. The United States Postal Service is kicking off its Operation Santa campaign.
For more than a century, the postal service has been helping Santa and his elves deliver to those who need it the most. Emmeri Archer is hoping to make the holidays brighter for children in need.
The Bed-Stuy resident is hoping to adopt a letter this year as part of the USPS operation, which means she can buy any or all of the items on a child's list.
For 107 years, USPS has been delivering holiday cheer, and this year it has expanded to 15 cities besides New York and added a digital element.
"Before it was only paper, now the customers can go online and read all the letters and pick which one they want to answer," said Strategic Communication Specialist Amy Bolger.
They encourage children or even adults to write in with things that they need.
"Now that we're in the digital age, we're trying to encourage letter writing for kids and you know, knowing how a letter works -- where you put the return address, where you put the actual address you know, putting it into the mailbox. These are all things we take for granted," said Bolger.
Some years, the program has received up to 35,000 letters and successfully adopted each letter. If you would like to participate, letters must be postmarked by Dec. 14 and packages have to be in the mail by Dec. 20.
